Below is a publicity video released by Pembroke College in 2010 announcing its “Bridging the Centuries” campaign, anticipating the construction of a new quadrangle to be reached from the old campus via a new bridge over a public thoroughfare. The project was completed in 2013.
What are your impressions of the new quad and its various exterior facades? To what extent does it complement or conflict architecturally with the older campus? Do the two parts of the campus feel like a coherent, unified whole or, rather, like two completely separate spaces with different identities? What is the relationship of the bridge to the public area (Brewer Street) beneath it?
Here, by the way, are links to the project pages for both the architectural firm, BGS Architects, and the structural engineering firm, Price & Myers.
